Rode the Sporty to Subway today for lunch (because that’s basically the only option there is where I work) and as I was leaving I noticed there were a few people standing around outside talking, and a couple little kids walking around. My bike is the typical “Harley loud” because the previous owner bashed out the muffler baffles (and quite frankly did a hack job on the rest of the exhaust), and I haven’t had the money to put on a better exhaust. Most days I don’t mind it, and in fact like it, because I don’t ride in populated areas very often, and if I do it’s usually the middle of the day when I don’t have to worry so much about waking someone up etc. Anyway, as I’m leaving Subway, I don’t want to be the jerk who interrupts everyone’s conversation, and deafens their kids with my loud bike, so I try to take off as calmly and quietly as possible and I kill the bike. I don’t care who you are, it’s always embarrassing to kill your bike in front of people, even if no one is looking. Normally though, you just pull the clutch, bump the starter and you’re off and running again. Not this time. Crank crank crank crank crank, pop pop pop pop, let go of the starter for a second, crank crank crank crank, pop pop pop, off the starter again to let the fuel pump catch up, crank crank crank, pop pop pop popop popopopop running, finally!

Gotta love it when you make a fool of yourself, then your bike makes an even bigger fool of you.

I was there. I saw and heard it all. Sounds like the bike was cold and needed a little warm up.

Just had to start my bike this weekend. Kept cranking and cranking. Then I realized I was in gear... then I realized I didnt have fuel on... all the while my friends are standing next to me waiting to hear it... I felt like an idiot... but whatever

The first time I stalled my truck was when I was 15. I was on a hill, at a stop light, with my mom in the truck (of course, learner’s permit), with a car so close behind me that I couldn’t see their grill in the mirror. I was so worried about rolling backwards into the car that I panicked when the light turned green and I stalled it. That’s when the honking started. In my ever-increasing panic, I got it restarted, revved it up and squealed the tires like I was in a drag race.

That was also the first time I cursed in front of my mom.

(If you really were though, cool, I don’t know of any other Opponauts in my area)

It probably was a little cold, I’d only ridden it about a few blocks before I got there. It is a fuel injected bike though and it always starts great when it’s cold, it’s only done this maybe one or two other times. Was very unusual for this bike for sure.

The only thing more embarrassing than a hard starting bike, is getting stuck between first and second and accidentally revving the piss out of the bike in front of a ton of people.

I’ve always been nervous about that when I was learning manual, luckily there’s not a lot of hills around here to worry about stalling on though.

The concept of the word “Sporty” and Harley makes my head hurt.

My bike is carbeurated. If it’s not 10c out, it’s all I can do to get rolling without stalling until the damn thing warms up. I have to over rev to get going, and even that is no guarantee. I’ve been making small adjustments to restrict the issue. Maybe this year will be the one...

Sporty is just the short name for Sportster. It’s... kinda sporty, at least for a Harley. Handling is at least confident, and power is... acceptable, (I just have the 883) although they can be hopped up pretty good (around 110 hp reliably).

Been there. My old XJs carbs were all out of whack for a while, took me a good year or so to get them dialed in right, and even now I keep wanting to fiddle with them.
